The source article for our post this week may not come from the Bay Area, but the dangerous circumstances involved apply to anyone, anywhere in the United States.

The story comes from Michigan, where a dog owner has been arrested after his dog viciously attacked his mother and her boyfriend. The 28-year-old says the incident isn’t his fault because he wasn’t home when the attack occurred. Nevertheless, his mother went to a crate that contained the dog and released the pit bull. The dog then attacked his mother and her boyfriend, dealing the 51-year-old boyfriend some serious injuries. The police had to use a stun gun to subdue the dog, which was later euthanized.

The 28-year-old was charged with multiple counts of harboring a dangerous dog that caused serious injury. Apparently the man was ticketed just one month ago after his dog attacked his mother. Clearly, this is a dog owner that doesn’t understand his responsibilities, let alone the potential risks of a dog that has already exhibited dangerous behaviors.

Dogs are powerful animals. They are “domesticated” in the sense that they are now comfortable being around people. But just because they are “domesticated” doesn’t mean dogs have lost all of their instincts. Some breeds are more powerful and dangerous than others. When their instincts kick in and they feel threatened, they may attack.

Dog owners have to realize this, especially if they have big, powerful dogs. Failing to properly train them can lead to them being held liable for any attack their dog may commence.
