Slow drivers are dangerous, too

Speeding drivers are definitely dangerous, and excessive speed factors into many car accidents every year. They make avoidable mistakes, they can’t react quickly enough to things happening around them and they increase the likelihood of serious injuries in a crash.

But does that mean you should just slow way down to be safe? While driving the speed limit or slightly slower is a good idea, you do not want to drive far below it. Remember, slow drivers are dangerous, too.

There are a lot of problems with going too slow. For one thing, a driver who is too slow can cause people behind them to slam on the brakes. This creates a chain reaction and can lead to traffic congestion or even a traffic jam. One person who blocks the rest of the lane really creates a significant hazard as vehicles pile up behind them.

It’s also hazardous to drive too slowly in the wrong lane on the interstate. Slow traffic is supposed to stay to the right. When a slow driver stays in the left lane, that forces people to move over and pass on the right. This feels unnatural, it leads to unnecessary slowdowns and it can even lead to accidents as cars start to weave all over the interstate.

So, while speeding is dangerous, it’s important to remember that the opposite is dangerous, too. The key is to drive with the flow of traffic, at the speed limit.
